1. The client

Our client is a global hospitality technology company. Its channel manager lets hotels manage room rates, availability and inventory across online travel agencies such as Booking.com, Expedia and Agoda from one platform.

Hotel users configure room types, rate plans, restrictions and promotions in a web portal, with a mobile interface to view and manage rates and inventory. Backend services then push and pull that data through each channel's APIs.

A wrong rate or a broken channel mapping can end up on a live OTA listing, so every release has to be checked before it ships.

2. The challenge

Complex business rules across many channels

Each hotel combines its own room types, rate plans, restrictions and channel mappings, and each OTA exchanges data in its own way, in XML or JSON, through REST or SOAP APIs.

With so many combinations, the team depended heavily on manual validation, and integration issues between the platform and the OTAs were hard to pin down.

Five challenges shaped the testing work.

  1. Rate and inventory sync

Rates and inventory had to stay accurate and in step across multiple OTA channels.

  2. Complex business rules

The rules were complex enough that validation depended heavily on manual checks.

  3. Many configurations

Room types, rate plans, restrictions and channel mappings each needed their own checks.

  4. Integration issues

Problems between the platform and external OTA systems were hard to identify.

  5. Safe API validation

API responses and error scenarios had to be validated without affecting production data.

The client needed a QA engineer who understood both hotel distribution and the APIs behind it, and who could check each release before it reached hotels and their channels.

3. The solution

Manual and API testing built around rates, inventory and channels

BEEU TECH deployed a QA engineer who works inside the client's product and engineering teams, joining daily stand-ups, sprint reviews and release validation.

The testing combines manual checks of the portal with API testing in Postman and SQL checks on the database, so each update can be followed through the portal, the APIs, the database and the OTA responses.

Six pillars of the testing practice

  1. Structured test cases

Designed test cases for rate updates, inventory updates, restrictions and channel mappings, about 80–150 per release across UI workflows and API validations.

  2. API testing in Postman

Validated request and response structures, status codes and business rules in Postman, across positive, negative and edge-case scenarios.

  3. Database validation

Used SQL queries to confirm that data sent and received through the APIs and the portal was stored and processed correctly.

  4. Channel data consistency

Compared the platform's data with OTA responses, including the XML-based OTA APIs, to keep rates, inventory and mappings consistent.

  5. Clear defect reporting

Logged around 15–30 defects per release with detailed reproduction steps, and re-tested each fix with the developers.

  6. Release validation

Took part in stand-ups, sprint reviews and release validation, testing each release for 2–3 days, or up to 5–6 days for larger features.

4. The engineering team

BEEU TECH placed a QA engineer in the client's team, working with its developers and product teams on every release.

  • QA and API Test Engineer

Designs and runs manual and API tests, validates data with SQL, logs defects and supports release validation.

Close to three years on the same platform means the engineer knows its business rules, its channels and its weak spots, and tests with that knowledge built in.

5. The testing cycle

How each release is tested

Releases ship every two weeks, with smaller fixes weekly. Each one goes through the same cycle.

  1. Step 1

    Requirements and business flows

Testing starts with the functional requirements and the business workflows behind rate and inventory distribution.

  2. Step 2

    Test design

Test cases are written for UI and backend validations, covering rates, inventory, restrictions and channel mappings.

  3. Step 3

    Manual, API and data testing

The engineer runs the manual tests, exercises the APIs in Postman with positive, negative and edge cases, and checks the database with SQL.

  4. Step 4

    Defects and re-testing

Defects go to the developers with detailed reproduction steps, and each fix is re-tested.

  5. Step 5

    Release validation

Each release gets 2–3 days of testing, or up to 5–6 days for larger or more complex features, before it ships.

6. The business impact

Fewer production issues and more confident releases

Most issues are now found before release, so fewer problems with mappings and data reach production.

40–50%Fewer production issues

Most issues were identified before release, including incorrect mappings and data inconsistencies.

80–150Test cases per release

UI workflows and API validations, designed and run for every release.

30–40%Of defects found in APIs and integrations

The other 60–70% were in the UI and workflows, so both layers are tested in every release.

Before and after the testing practice

BeforeAfter
Heavy dependence on manual validationStructured manual and API test cases for every release
Integration issues hard to pin downAPI and integration defects caught before release
Production issues from wrong mappings and dataProduction issues down by roughly 40–50%
Slower issue resolutionFaster fixes from clear, reproducible defect reports
Lower release confidenceHigher confidence in every release

7. Long-term value

Testing knowledge that compounds with every release

After close to three years and many release cycles, the engineer's test cases cover the platform's business rules, channel mappings and API edge cases in depth.

That depth keeps rate and inventory distribution stable across OTA channels, release after release.

The engagement shows how a QA specialist who stays with one product becomes part of how it ships.

8. Technology stack

The tools used and the platform under test

  • PostmanAPI testing
  • SQLDatabase validation
  • REST and SOAP APIsInternal and OTA APIs, in XML and JSON

9. Engineer perspective

“Careful validation of business rules, API responses, and channel integrations helped ensure stable releases and reduced operational risks.”
